Brown Leafed Vertigo

Does anyone know where in Austin I might be able to find fake (but real-ish looking, you know, with feathers and feet and beaks) birds? Michael’s and Hobby Lobby are on the list, but on the day before Halloween, I don’t think I’ll be able to find much of anything there. I’ve had no luck at the Burnet Road thrift stores. Suggestions?

I Built A Shrine for you on the Kitchen Wall with Flowers and Florida Souvenirs

I went away and now I’m back. This should be something of an anti-climax.

There are good things afoot lately. It’s lovely autumn. We went to the lovely, autumnal midwest and saw my wonderful, wintery brother and perdurable papa. I had a not-terrible job interview today for a library position that I really want. I’ve seen a whole lot of great shows lately, including the Phantom Limbs, Holly Golightly and La Fraction (who are interviewed in the most recent Maximum Rock and Roll, and one of the best live bands I’ve seen in a long damn time), as well as all the local faves in abundance (Dirty Sweets, the Mood Killers, East Side Suicides). And Halloween is almost here!

Possibly the best thing to happen in the last few days however, was yesterday when I was coming home from work in the strange near-dark. I was listening to Public Enemy’s “By the Time I Get to Arizona” super loud driving up Lamar Blvd. and when I was almost home, all the streetlights for miles came on at once. It seemed auspicious, but I couldn’t tell you why.

Feedlot Feedback

It’s really heartwarming when one encounters a person really committed to a cause, really living lightly and thoughtfully and considerately on the earth. Peeny Wally has had such a visitor, back in August, and I actually missed it. But here, I’ll share. Just read this delightful message left in response to this entry from June 12 of this year:

i think that the person that posted this message has serious problems… u leave vegans and our food alone, i hope u die of cancer, or a disease given 2 u by an animal u sick bastard.

Thanks for the kind sentiments Vegan Luva. And thanks for taking the time and care to read everything I wrote and submitting a reasoned, well thought-out response, as well as answering some questions I had about a vegan diet. You’ve really represented your community well. I hope u drop by again, ‘k?

From Living With Music

by Ralph Ellison

…Living with music today we find Mozart and Ellington, Kirsten Flagstad and Chippie Hill, William L. Dawson and Carl Orff all forming part of our regular fare. For all exalt life in rhythm and melody; all add to its significance. Perhaps in the swift change of American society in which the meanings of one’s origin are so quickly lost, one of the chief values of living with music lies in its power to give us an orientation in time. In doing so, it gives significance to all those indefinable aspects of experience which nevertheless help to make us what we are. In the swift whirl of time music is a constant, reminding us of what we were and of that toward which we aspire. Art thou troubled? Music will not only calm, it will enoble thee.
