LibraryLookup
- Drag one of the links above to the link toolbar of your web browser (or bookmark it — the links won’t work if you simply click on them from this page, though). You may want to rename the link to something succinct and meaningful, like ‘APL Lookup.’
- Look up a book at an online bookseller such as Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble. Hardbound editions tend to give better results.
- Click the new link from your link toolbar. A window should pop up with availability and checkout information from the chosen library.
These library links were created using (or in the second case, inspired by) the LibraryLookup site.

Let’s say you’re using IE 6. If you go to View->Toolbars, check the menu item labeled “Links.” A toolbar labeled “Links” should display, either below or to the side of the address bar. Click and drag one of the links onto that toolbar. Alternatively, right-click on one of the links, choose “Add to favorites,” and save the link to the “Links” menu.
Then, say you’ve been poking around Amazon.com, and you’ve found the page for “The Blue Lantern,” a book of short stories by Russian writer Victor Pelevin, and reading the favorable reviews has piqued your interest. (The page is http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811213706/qid=1042513389/sr=1-1/ref=sr11/104-0706761-1907133?v=glance&s=books )
Without leaving that page, click on one of the library links that you just added. A popup window should appear with checkout information at whichever library you’ve picked.
This definitely works on a fair number of major browsers, including IE6/Win, Phoenix/Win, and IE5/Mac.
