I think Mr. Filthy is a better movie critic than I. Well-crafted cynicism continues to be more worthwhile than all the world’s sincerity.
In other (and possibly final) Solaris news, I bought the Criterion reissue of the Tarkovsky movie, which is brimming with nifty extras, like a fascinating interview with the very animated and longwinded Natalya Bondarchuk — in which she opines in no particular order about God, herself, the director, Russia, art, spirituality, the KGB, herself, etc. while the bored photographer occasionally zooms restlessly in and out on her fireplace — plus Polish documentary footage of Stanislaw Lem shoveling snow from his driveway. (It occurs to me as I write this that neither of those sound interesting at all, but such is the way of the art film.) Normally I don’t give a shit about DVD extras, but this case is a necessary exception because of my geeky obsession with the film and book, not to mention the DVD’s $30 price tag. Which, incidentally, is the reason why I had to cut a friend from my Christmas shopping list. Sorry, Seth.
I think I might have a new car in a few days. Thank you, Sean, for driving me to the car dealer and waiting there all day with me.

hey, this is interesting. natalya’s father, sergei bondarchuk, besides being a notable director in his own right, was the narrator in eisenstein’s “que viva mexico.”
