In my dream last night, Karla had returned from her year-long stay in Japan, so Tamara, Hoss, and I took her to a high school pep rally, declaring it to be in her honor. New Order and Salt ‘N Pepa blared over a single loudspeaker, the drill team stomped around in tasseled boots, the cheerleaders tossed themselves to and fro, and the football team roared. We sat high in the bleachers and sneered. A short time passed, the noise ended and the crowd began to exit the gym, but realizing that I had left my books behind, I turned around and backtracked to find them. I pushed through the crowd to where we had been sitting and scooped the books up, but took a wrong turn into the alley behind the bleachers, where I was forced to run a gauntlet of pimply, teenaged Japanese Yakuza. This was perfectly natural and I was a fool for leading myself into the situation. Each gangster that I passed slapped me on the face, causing me to spill my books. Each book that I picked up became successively more embarrassing to be seen with, starting with something by L. Ron Hubbard, and ending with Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus by the time I faced the final Yakuza. I finally emerged from the gym and into the afternoon sun, clutching a stack of self-help books, bruised and crying. Tamara and Karla greeted me and smiled, asking what took me so long.

hey, no offense, but if that was supposed to be snide, you may want to stick with vapid sincerity.
