There’s been a slight lull at work for the past couple hours, so I was finally able to finish the work I was doing on chompy.net’s front page. It takes advantage of a feature of Movable Type 2.5 that ‘pings’ specially written servers to notify them of an update. So chompy.net now receives those pings, and additionally goes out and grabs an excerpt of the new weblog entry, then stuffs everything in a database to be retrieved by the front page, which is a PHP script. The server portion was written in Python, which I just learned over this past week. I like it.
Some of the libraries I used are licensed under the GPL, which means I’m legally (or at least ethically) obligated to release my source code, which I’ll do tonight this weekend. Ick. The source code is crappy, as one might expect from someone who has just learned the language.
Seth, would you mind upgrading your installation of Movable Type when you have a chance? And then I’ll show you how to configure MT to ping chompy. Unless you don’t care, and then I’ll cry.
