fire in Saigon

AP photo of Saigon fire

Depending on the source, from 50 to 100 people died yesterday in an office building fire in Saigon. Firefighters were unable to adequately respond due to “low water pressure, poor equipment and too-short ladders.” Among the dead is a Vietnamese-American from California named Vi Ai Hu. Ai is my brother’s name, and it means love.

I read about major disasters in Vietnam at least yearly — usually floods that kill dozens to hundreds of people. I always wonder if there’s somebody that — if things had been just a bit different — I should be mourning.

  1. Mourn everyone’s passing - some people don’t have anyone but strangers to mourn for them.

And say a prayer every time an emergency vehicle drives by with it’s lights on - chances are someone could use a prayer right about then.

  2. I didn’t mean to imply that I don’t feel grief when other people die. I don’t know how I could, since this entry is my way of saying a eulogy for the dead.

  3. I know. I didn’t mean to imply that you don’t feel grief. I was just really taken with your entry and wrote when I should’ve just been quiet.

  4. No, my bad for misunderstanding you. You are welcome to write whatever you feel.
