but back to the beach

It was beautiful, really. I don’t even like beaches, because I grew up next to one — a Texas beach, and those are the worst. This was a Texas beach, too, at Surfside Beach, Texas. Surfside Beach is filthy. It’s an armpit. The beach is a narrow strand of fish heads, bottles, wrappers, and broken foundations. The tap water is unfit for human consumption. It took two pisses before I realized that everyone else was flushing, and that water there is simply yellow always.

And yet it was beautiful. Hoss and Billy swam with dolphins. We napped and read novels. We flew a kite, and it never came down.

Well, yeah, it did. But it was fun. I didn’t even mind the drive.
