around the warm bend
just in time to provide mike additional clues, tonight i turned the 40k corner. in light of this, the original goal of 50k by 30 on the 15th has been revised to 65k. i rewarded myself with ice cream and the season two x-files dvd box set.
so last week virginia's computer crashed. the failure is nontrivial and it's a pentium 233 so it's a writeoff. she's shopping for a new computer and came over here so i could assist her with this. i fired up excel and made a few experimental builds and priced out some of the offerings from the big OEMs. this was before she came over, mind you. when she arrived, i (with rising excitement) began to break all this down for her. she got sick to death of it in about nine minutes. i found the contrast in attitudes delightful. we went to eat and i was still thinking about it. i'm still thinking about it now. to her credit however, she did enjoy the trip to fry's, even with the semi-creepy sales guy we had to deal with.
in a depressing followup to my last entry, a woman was killed by lightning this morning on her way to work. the 10900 block of wickersham where she was struck is a couple hundred feet away from the beck's restaurant where i was telling virginia about my recent fear of lightning. the constant thunder from this morning's storm sent our cats into hiding and caused me, half-awake, to scrunch up against the top left corner of my futon in order to get as far away from the aluminum-paned window as possible. just in case.
