temporary cheraunophobia

i have become uncharacteristically interested in professional sports recently. i find myself checking the major league baseball standings online via cnn sports. only just now did i remember that in elementary school i used to do this in the morning while eating breakfast. checking the newspaper for box scores and standings. i still find the names of the american league teams to be very exotic, since houston's team is in the national league. the detroit tigers. the seattle mariners. the kansas city royals. tigers, ships, kings. national league teams don't excite me this way. not even the pittsburgh pirates. my favorite thing about football back then was the pencils you could get with all the team names on them. i could sit and stare at those for a long time. then i got a set of pencils with my own name on them and lost interest in football once and for all.

went with virginia to see the harry potter movie again this afternoon (we saw it at midnight last thursday). this is the first of the three films that i felt has really clicked. it has odd pacing (this comes back to the book, really) and is very rushed, but alfonso cuarĂ³n got the thing of it. i won't bore you adults any more on this subject, except to say that it's rumored that ian brown has a cameo in one of the scenes at the leaky cauldron. ian brown of the stone roses, for those of you who never had a subscription to melody maker or the NME.

before the movie we sat at beck's watching a summer storm and i explained to viriginia my recent fear of lightning. a few days ago i was asked by someone to provide evidence for my claim that people have been killed by lightning while sitting on the toilet, and during my search for proof i came across many unpleasant stories of lightning death. also a few unpleasant pictures, even though i have already (due to a lifetime interest in fortean phenomena) seen the famous photographic example of spontaneous human combustion which is also in a bathroom. maybe it was lightning! i'm confident this fear will soon pass and i will go back to loving lightning.
